Jewellery

_DSC7612

How long has jewelry been around and why?

The use of it goes back to the beginnings of mankind:

Research from 2006 indicates that people were already decorating themselves with shells 100,000 years ago - color pigments even show that these shells were painted.

But why did people start wearing jewelry in the first place?
It is thought that it was used early on to protect against the dangers of life or as a sign of status or rank.
Archaeologists assume that people back then wore jewelry to show their status to strangers.

The Spanish philosopher Fernando Savater, on the other hand, is convinced that prehistoric people recognized their mortality and wanted to use jewelry to show that they were happy and still alive.

30,000 BC, hunters in Europe wore pendants made from the bones and teeth of their prey.
These were not just simple jewelry, but also a talisman that was supposed to bring them luck.
The pieces of this period were very simple due to the limited technical possibilities.

Over a period of 20,000 years, people made do with stone beads; other forms of jewelry were not developed.

The discovery of metalworking in antiquity was an important step in the development of the art of jewelry.

Jewelry, for example, played an important role in Egyptian life, as it gave the white linen robes a colorful accent - it was also very important in the belief in the dead at the time.
Many pieces from this period have been preserved to this day and provide a lot of information about their history:

The deceased were not only presented with the jewelry they had worn during their lifetime, but also with specially made jewels for their journey home.

Egyptian jewelry makers primarily produced amulets - the selection was rather limited, but the pieces had a magical-religious meaning that was more important than the decorative aspect.

Beginning with the discovery of metalworking and continuing with glassmaking in the 20th century, jewelry is now produced in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes.

Avant-garde jewelry is a fascinating blend of art, design and craftsmanship.
It is characterized by experimental forms, innovative materials and unconventional approaches that often take a critical stance towards traditional norms.
In the avant-garde, jewelry is not just seen as an ornamental accessory, but as an expression of identity, philosophy and social ideas.

Artistic movements such as Dadaism, Surrealism and the Bauhaus style have had a strong influence on the development of avant-garde jewelry in the past.

The designs are often abstract, asymmetrical or even linked to concepts of “anti-jewelry”, in which the classic notions of beauty and elegance are questioned.

A striking feature of avant-garde jewelry is its often provocative aesthetic, which blurs the boundary between jewelry and art. Overall, avant-garde jewelry is a form of self-expression that questions traditions and breaks new, often radical ground in design. We have recently received jewelry and accessories from SKINMACHINE - leather + metal in an avant-garde symbiosis that perfectly complements our designers' outfits.
