PULLOVER

A classic that no one can do without: the PULLOVER! The first items of clothing similar to today's sweaters appeared in early modern Europe. They were mostly knitted and were worn by fishermen and sailors to protect them from the cold.

The term "pullover" is derived from the English word "to pull over" - meaning a "garment to pull over". The pullovers were hand-knitted and characteristic wool pullovers with cable patterns were created, particularly in regions such as Guernsey, Jersey, Norway and Ireland, and still exist in this form today.

In the 19th century - in the context of industrialization - it became easier to produce knitwear, as the first knitting machines were created. Sweaters could now be produced in larger quantities and became part of the uniforms of sailors and sportsmen. Around 1880, British students and athletes wore sweaters outside of work and sport for the first time - the first step of the sweater towards leisure fashion was made. In the 1920s, Coco Chanel made knitwear socially acceptable and the sweater was no longer seen as a purely pragmatic item of clothing, but as having arrived in fashion.

In the 1950s and 60s, the sweater became a symbol of elegance and intellectuality. Turtleneck sweaters made of fine knitwear in particular were now worn in artistic and intellectual circles.

The 70s and 80s, on the other hand, were characterized by colourful and patterned pieces and wide oversized cuts also became a trend, which can also be observed again today. Fans of the avant-garde in particular know that oversized sweaters are always a fashion statement.

The sweater is now available in countless materials. Of course, different types of wool are still number one, but allergy-friendly materials such as cotton and silk are also widely represented in our designers' collections. Many sweaters are machine-knitted, but there are also many hand-knitted sweaters, especially in the avant-garde segment.
