Pearls are a miracle of nature that show that something disturbing can become something beautiful. When a foreign body - such as a grain of sand or a parasite - gets inside a shell, it begins to coat it layer by layer with mother-of-pearl. What is a protective reaction becomes something precious: a pearl.
Natural pearls are extremely rare. It is estimated that there is only one pearl in 10,000 mussels. This is why cultured pearls are usually used, as the quality is the same, although cultured pearls are significantly cheaper as they can be reproduced in a targeted manner. Pearls are one of the oldest pieces of jewelry known to mankind. Ancient finds show that pearls were already being worn over 7,000 years ago - that is long before gold or gemstone cuts were developed.
It is said that pearls "lived" with the light - what is meant by this is that their deep shimmer (the so-called lustre) is created by the special structure of the mother-of-pearl, which refracts the light in fine layers. High-quality pearls with corresponding layers of mother-of-pearl therefore almost appear to glow from within.
The formation of a pearl is not a quick process, rather patience is needed to give the process of transformation its time. Depending on the species and cultivation conditions, the time span varies from 6 months to several years. Freshwater pearls are the fastest growing pearls and are ready for harvesting after approx. 6 months.
Tahitian and South Sea pearls take considerably longer - the growth time for a pearl is at least 2 to 4 years. For natural pearls, the time span is significantly longer. PEARL is one of the central colors of the current studiob3 collection. It is a light, slightly bluish yet warm gray.
