Did you know that with over 34,000 known species, they are the most diverse group of vertebrates on Earth?! Some fish, like the lungfish, can even survive for months outside of water by entering a type of summer hibernation.
Deep-sea fish, which live in complete darkness, are particularly exciting. They often have glowing body parts (bioluminescence) to attract prey or confuse enemies. The frogfish, for example, has a kind of “fishing rod” with luminous bait, which it uses to lure other animals into its trap.
Another curious example is the anemonefish (known from “Finding Nemo”), which lives in symbiosis with poisonous sea anemones and is protected from the deadly nettles by a layer of mucus, while using the anemone as a safe haven.
